What do I mean by secondhand spirituality? When I was a boy, bargains were essential to my family. We knew how to stretch our money. It did not matter to anyone whether necessities or gifts were new or secondhand. My most memorable gifts were a used guitar and a secondhand go-cart. However, after ceaselessly entertaining myself with song and speed for a season, I lost interest in the music and the motors. No surprise. They did not cost me anything. They were secondhand, so I quickly moved on to other things.

In my book, Secondhand Spirituality: 21st Century's Hottest Trend, I show that most people treat spirituality the way I treated my childhood gifts. They pick up their spirituality without much thought, hold it for a time, modify it when they want, mix their beliefs willy-nilly, and exchange it for another form whenever it suits their mood. And if life's experiences threaten their satisfaction or happiness, they discard their self-designed spirituality for another feel-good format. That is why I label this widespread phenomenon secondhand spirituality.
